UTA-UTSA Box Score
SAN ANTONIO, Tx. - If you are a fan of college basketball, UTA's 100-97 double overtime victory at UT San Antonio had everything you could have wanted and more.
For starters, the game was tied 16 times and the lead changed another 19 times. It also featured another 10 minutes of action as it took two extra periods for the Mavericks to end UTSA's seven-game winning streak and win their first Southland Conference road game of the season.
Marquez Haynes led a balanced offensive attack for the Mavs as he scored 20 points. Anthony Vereen, Brandon Long, Roge'r Guignard and Tommy Moffitt each added 19 for the Mavericks.
"It was a great win for us against a good team on the road," said Mavericks head coach Scott Cross. "We battled and played hard all night. They were the hottest team in the league and we were able to hang together and keep fighting and end up with the victory."
UTA took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Haynes with 2:31 to play to give the Mavs a 92-90 lead. The Roadrunners cut the lead to one with 1:33 remaining after Omar Johnson made one of two free throws.
Long made a layup with 1:28 to go to increase the lead to three and after UTSA went one of two from the line again Moffitt converted another layup to go up by four.
The Mavs then led 99-97 when Long made a free throw with 12 seconds remaining to increased the lead to three. UTSA's Joey Shank missed a three-point shot and Long grabbed the rebound and ran out the clock.
It appeared the game would be over in regulation on a number of occasions as the teams traded baskets down the stretch. Vereen made a layup with 47 second left to give the Mavs the lead at 71-70.
UTSA's Devin Gibson then came down the floor and made a long three-pointer and was fouled on the shot by Haynes. Gibson converted the four-point play and the Mavs found themselves down by three.
Haynes tied to make up for the foul by shooting a three from the top of the key but the shot missed and Guignard grabbed the long rebound and hit a three from the right wing to tie the game.
In the first overtime, the Mavericks appeared to have the upper hand with a three-point lead and less than a minute to play. Gibson, however, put the game into another five minutes as he converted a three-point play with 35 seconds to go.
Guignard missed a jumper to give the Mavs a lead and then Johnson missed a long three-pointer which would have won the game.
The victory was the Mavericks fifth road win of the season and came after playing their first home game in 50 days on Wednesday against Lamar.
"This shows that playing all of those road games has paid off," said Cross. "We were close in some of those games and came up short by tonight we didn't. I'm proud of the way we played tonight."
The win was the first for the Mavericks at UTSA since 2004 and was the first overtime game of the season.
UTA finished the game shooting an even 50% as they made 38-of-76 from the floor. They continued their trend of winning games when they held their opponents to less than 45% from the field as UTSA to a 43.8% shooting night.
The Mavs also scored 50 of their points in the paint and outscored the Roadrunners 39-21 in bench points.
The victory puts UTA at 9-7 overall and 2-1 in Southland Conference play. Their next game is Wednesday at Texas Hall against Stephen F. Austin. UTSA dropped to 10-5 and 2-1 in the conference.
