Box Score
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - UT Arlington suffered its ninth straight loss to Stephen F. Austin 25-14, 25-15, 25-22 on Saturday afternoon at William R. Johnson Coliseum. The Mavericks (9-14, 5-6 SLC) fall to 0-9 on the road this season while the Ladyjacks (18-11, 7-4) notch their eighth straight win over UTA in Nacogdoches.
"We just couldn't find any fight once they took over the momentum," UT Arlington head coach Diane Seymour said. "That was the problem with our team today."
Tara Frantz led UTA with eight kills, Raegan Daniel added 23 assists and seven digs, Alicia Shaffer led the team with 13 digs and Bianca Sauls recorded 10 digs and six kills. Emily Shearin led UTA with a .357 hitting percentage with seven kills, and she finished with a team-high three blocks.
Shearin and Christy Driscoll jump started the Maverick offense early with a pair of kills each, bringing the Mavericks within a point (6-7). Driscoll's third kill of the set tied the score at 13, and then it was all SFA as the Ladyjacks finished the set on a 12-1 run - which included five UTA errors - to grab the 25-14 first-set victory.
The Mavericks received kills from five different players in the first set, led by Driscoll's three, but committed 10 errors that helped lead to SFA's 1-0 lead in the match.
UTA took its first lead of the match early in the second set - by as many as two points, 6-4 - and then the score was tied at 12 following kills from Sauls and Amanda Aguilera and a block assist from Sauls and Driscoll.
Then in almost the exact point as the first set, SFA went on a dominating 13-3 run to finish the set. Three straight SFA kills forced a UTA timeout, and then seven additional kills, an ace and a pair of UTA hitting errors followed to give the Ladyjacks their second straight set victory.
"The first two sets we stayed with them early on," Seymour said. "But then they just took control of the match."
SFA recorded 17 kills (UTA had nine) while the attack errors were equal at three and SFA out-blocked the Mavs 3-to-2 in the set. Shearin was the only Maverick to have a hitting percentage above .050 after the second set (.333 - 4 kills - 1 errors - 9 attacks) as UTA was hitting .093 going into the third frame. Sauls led the Mavs in the set with three kills and added a block.
The lead changed six times and there were seven ties in the third set before SFA extended its lead to as many as five points on four occasions. With SFA leading 20-15, the Mavericks made a late charge with a 7-4 run to cut the Ladyjacks lead to 22-24. But then Ashley Bailey put away the final point of the match with a kill to give SFA a three-set sweep. Shearin tallied three kills and three blocks for UTA in the set.
UT Arlington will head back to their home court for a three-match homestand next week taking on Texas State (Nov. 3), Sam Houston State (Nov. 5) and Lamar (Nov. 7) at Texas Hall.
