Strong Effort from Mavericks in Close Match Against Sam Houston

ARLINGTON, Texas — UT Arlington lost to Sam Houston 3-2 on Saturday at College Park Center, falling 25-18, 24-26, 23-25, 25-15, 15-11. The Mavericks rallied from two-point deficits to take the second and third sets, but the push was not enough to overcome Sam Houston.

Senior Samantha Glenn recorded her 1,000th career dig during tonight's game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening set stayed level through 8-8, with Sophia Krichev and Evyn Snook providing early kills before Emilee Sikora's third kill brought the Mavericks even again. Sam Houston moved back in front 11-9 on a Chelsea Butler kill, but an attack error by Rachelle Reed, a block by Hana Aiana and Karisa Martin, and another Sam Houston attack error gave the Mavericks a 12-11 lead. After Sam Houston went ahead 14-12, kills by Evyn Snook, Sikora and Martin pushed the Mavericks in front 15-14, but Sam Houston answered with five straight points, including two Rachelle Reed kills and a Chloe Monson ace, to lead 19-15. The Mavericks got back within 21-18 on a Sam Houston service error, but Bella Wood followed with a kill and later served consecutive aces as Sam Houston closed the set 25-18.

Sam Houston opened the second set with the first three points and later led 8-3 after a Chloe Monson service ace. The Mavericks worked back within 11-9 behind a Lucy Tricco ace, an Evyn Snook kill and a Sam Houston attack error, then erased a 13-11 deficit with kills from Sikora, Snook and Sophia Krichev before a Krichev-Tricco block helped put the Mavericks ahead 15-13. The teams traded points through the late stages, with the Mavericks moving ahead 20-18 on consecutive Snook kills before Sam Houston tied it at 21-21 and again at 24-24 on a Bella Wood kill. Snook answered with a kill for a 25-24 lead, and a Chloe Monson attack error closed the Mavericks' 26-24 set win.

UTA scored the first two points on a Sam Houston attack error and an Evyn Snook ace, but Sam Houston answered with five straight points and later built a 12-5 lead. The Mavericks cut into the gap with a four-point stretch to 14-11 that included two Sikora kills, then pulled within 18-16 on kills by Sikora, Tricco and Snook. Sam Houston was still in front 22-19 and 23-21 late, but UTA closed the set with four straight points, tying it on a Sam Houston attack error, reaching set point on a Martin-Sophia Krichev block and finishing the 25-23 win on a Samantha Glenn service ace.

The Mavericks scored first on an Evyn Snook kill from Erica Dellesky and pulled even at 2-2 on a Hana Aiana block, but Sam Houston answered with a 7-1 stretch to move ahead 9-3. Tricco, Camryn McMinn and Snook had kills as the Mavericks cut into the early margin, getting as close as 12-9 before Bella Wood's kill and service run helped Sam Houston push the lead to 17-9. The Mavericks got late points on a Sophia Krichev-Camryn McMinn block and a Tricco kill, but Sam Houston reached set point at 24-14 and finished the set 25-15 on a service error.

Sophia Krichev's kill and a block by Tricco and Krichev brought the Mavericks even at 2-2 after Sam Houston took the first two points on attack errors. Sam Houston moved back in front, but Camryn McMinn answered with a kill and a service ace to tie the fifth set at 6-6. Sam Houston took the next three points, including kills by Chloe Monson and Bella Wood around a block by Faith Roulston and Rachelle Reed, to go ahead 9-6. The Mavericks stayed within reach on kills by Hana Aiana, Evyn Snook, Krichev and McMinn, but Annika Brooks had three late kills for Sam Houston, including the final point in a 15-11 set finish.
