ARLINGTON, Texas — UT Arlington lost to Army West Point 3-0 (21-25, 20-25, 24-26) on Saturday. The Mavericks rallied from 11-19 to 22-21 in the third set, but the push was not enough to avoid the sweep.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Camryn McMinn served consecutive aces after an Army service error to put the Mavericks ahead 3-0 in the opening set. Army pulled even at 5-5 on a Juliette Myrick kill, but the Mavericks moved back in front behind repeated swings from
Evyn Snook and reached 14-10 after a block by Snook and
Sophia Krichev. The set tightened when Army erased a 17-14 deficit to tie it at 17-17, and after Snook put the Mavericks back ahead 18-17, Army answered with three straight points for a 20-18 lead. The Mavericks got back within 21-20 on a Snook kill, but Army took four of the final five points and closed the set 25-21 on a Marlee Lightsey kill.
After the Mavericks took the first point of the second set, Army moved in front 5-2 behind two kills from Kennedy Jones and a Naomi Chinchar service ace. The visitors stretched the margin to 10-4 with a Juliette Myrick kill and back-to-back blocks that led to Mavericks attack errors, but the Mavericks cut it to 12-8 on an
Evyn Snook kill, a Breelyn Bender attack error and a
Hana Aiana kill. Army kept separation through the middle of the set, reaching 20-14 and later 24-18 as Jones added several late kills.
Camryn McMinn put down consecutive kills to bring the Mavericks within 24-20 before Myrick closed the set for Army, 25-20.
After
Emilee Sikora's ace brought the Mavericks within 14-11, Army scored the next five points, including Ryan Leclair's service ace and Juliette Myrick's kill, to build a 19-11 lead. The Mavericks worked back to 20-15 behind two
Evyn Snook kills, a
Sophia Krichev kill and a block by
Lucy Tricco and Krichev, but Army pushed the margin back to 21-15. Snook's kill gave the Mavericks the serve, and she served six straight points as Krichev put down two kills, Krichev and Sikora combined on a block, and Snook added an ace to put the Mavericks ahead 22-21. Kennedy Jones tied the set at 22-22 and Army reached 24-22, but Krichev's kill and a block by
Milica Peci and Sikora tied it at 24-24 before Army took the final two rallies on Mavericks attack errors to win the set 26-24.
