Waco, Texas - One year ago exactly, the UT Arlington Mavericks almost pulled off an upset of a nationally-ranked Baylor team in Waco.
Fast forward to Sunday in Waco and the Bears made sure that was not going to happen as the Mavericks lost 94-63.
"Baylor played really well today and we didn't," UTA head coach Scott Cross said. "You have to give them credit, they made it hard for us to play today."
Baylor used a 14-0 run early in the game and another of 24-4 in the second half to erase any chance the Mavericks had to get back into the game.
Turnovers hindered the Mavericks early as they turned the ball over 17 times in the first half which the Bears turned into 25 points. UTA finished the game with 24, which Baylor converted into 32 points.
The Mavericks had trouble with the Baylor defense early and were held to just 32.3 shooting on the game. UTA went over 9 minutes in the second without a field goal as Baylor extended their lead to as many as 37 during that time.
Marquez Haynes was held in check all afternoon as well. Haynes, the second-leading scorer in the nation was held to just 16 points and turned the ball over eight times. Brandon Long was the only other player in double figures with 12.
Baylor's Epke Udoh almost had a triple-double with a game-high 22 points, 16 rebounds and nine blocks. He led four Baylor players in double figures.
Baylor shot 47.9% on the game and outrebounded the Mavericks 54-38. They also had 13 blocks and 11 steals.
The Mavericks starting guards and small forward combined for just four assists while turning the ball over 16 times.
The loss drops UT Arlington 4-4 while Baylor improved to 9-1.
