ARLINGTON, Tx. - UT Arlington head men's basketball coach Scott Cross announced today the program has signed guard Bryant Smith (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick HS) to a national letter of intent to begin playing for the Mavericks in the fall of 2009.
"Bryant is great all-around player who continues our tradition of having players from Chicago," Cross said. "He is an outstanding ball-handler and a good shooter. I'm looking for him to help us immediately and make us a better team."
Smith, who is 6-0, 170 pounds, joins forwards Jordan Reeves and Kerry Jones and guard Cameron Catlett in the Mavericks 2009 recruiting class.
Smith led the Shamrocks to a 19-6 record his senior season as he averaged 17 points, six rebounds and six assists per game.
He was a fourth team all-state selection and the East Suburban Catholic Conference Player of the Year. He earned all-area recognition from the Chicago Sun-Times and the suburban Pioneer Press. He was also an all-tournament selection at the Kurland Tournament at the start of his senior season.
Following this past season he was selected to play in the Chicago High School Classic All-Star Game and the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Game.
Smith chose UT Arlington over Western Michigan, Central Florida, Illinois-Chicago and Bradley among others.
