MBB: Mavericks Hungry for WAC Title Chase in 2025-26

ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington men's basketball is ready to embark on the 2025-26 season, with tip off set for Monday, Nov. 3, at home against UNT Dallas at the College Park Center for a White Out Game. The Mavs enter the year looking to bounce back from their 2024-25 season and are poised to compete for the Western Athletic Conference title in the final year of the WAC before transitioning to the United Athletic Conference.

The Mavs and the other WAC members are in a unique situation in 2025-26, with only seven member programs. That significantly differs from the size of most leagues across the college basketball national landscape, and provides a tremendous opportunity to win a league championship as well as the always-coveted NCAA Tournament berth that comes with it.

The Mavericks, led by third-year head coach KT Turner, finished 13-18 last season and fell to eventual WAC Champion Grand Canyon (who is now in the Mountain West) in the WAC Quarterfinals in Las Vegas. The Mavs are an impressive 21-7 at home in Turner's tenure at the College Park Center, where they will play three of their first four games this season and 13 overall.

UTA returns three total players from last season's roster in Preseason All-WAC selection Raysean Seamster, forward/center Cameron Jackson and guard Alex Bossinakis. Seamster, a senior from Portland, Oregon, is entering his second season in Arlington after making the decision to return to the Mavericks during the offseason. Seamster made 30 appearances, 29 of which were starts, in his first season in Arlington. He averaged 11.4 points per game and 4.9 rebounds per contest last season, scoring in double figures a team-high 23 times.

A leader as one of two scholarship returners for the Mavs, Seamster is an incredibly versatile wing who made an impact immediately upon his arrival in Arlington. He scored 15 or more points on seven occasions in 2024-25, including a career-high 29 on 9-of-11 shooting in a home win over California Baptist on Feb. 13. In addition to his 29-point scoring output in that contest, Seamster also pulled down eight boards in the victory.

Jackson saw his role grow throughout his freshman season, and the 6-8 Pflugerville native made 14 appearances for the Mavericks, averaging 2.0 points and 2.3 rebounds per game in limited action (7.1 minutes per game). Bossinakis joined the program in the middle of the season last year as a walk-on and did not appear for UTA during his initial season in Arlington.

With three familiar faces, the Mavs added seven players in the transfer portal, and four true freshmen. Of the seven transfers, two come from the high-major ranks, in guard Cash Chavis (Arkansas) and forward/center Miles Goodman (Penn State). The Mavs also added guard Marcus Rigsby, Jr. from Troy, who played in the NCAA Tournament last season with the Trojans, guard Tyran Mason from North Texas, forward Stoney Hadnot from South Dakota State, guard Marcell McCreary from Northern Colorado and guard Bahsil Laster from the junior college ranks and Harcum College.

The four freshmen include a pair of Texas state champions at the 6A level (Denton Guyer's Jordan Lowery) and 5A level (Lancaster's Amari "Slim" Reed), as well as a pair of guards from California in Jayden Smoot and Augustine Youssef. Lowery, an elite point guard, was a four-star prospect according to ESPN and helped Guyer to the 2024-25 state title, while Reed, a 6'8" forward/center helped lead Lancaster to the 2023-24 state crown.

"We got a little bit younger this year, and part of that was we wanted to keep these guys around," Assistant Coach Sean Stout said when asked about the roster construction. "We've got guys that we want to have with us for more than a year, more than two years if possible. We also certainly wanted more positional size one through five and there were some balls that we didn't get the rebound, or the loose ball or just didn't get a deflection that we felt we should have and we felt that way more last year. We wanted the prospect of guys that could play more than one position and being bigger at different spots and having more flexibility to how we play."

The Mavs will look different on the court compared to last year's squad, certainly in terms of length and athleticism. There are eight players on the roster 6'4" or taller, including three of those at the guard position.

Everything starts on the defensive end of the floor for a Turner team, and this group in particular looks to bring a physicality to that side of the ball that has this coaching staff excited. Physicality is one thing – but an emphasis has certainly been put on physicality without fouling.

The Mavericks open the season with three of their first four games at home in the friendly confines of the College Park Center with Monday's tilt with UNT Dallas, a trip to Albuquerque to take on the Lobos of New Mexico (Nov. 8), a return home to host Arlington Baptist (Nov. 10) and a Homecoming date with Missouri State (Nov. 15). UTA then hits the road for three straight when they go to Evansville (Nov. 18) prior to an MTE tournament at Weber State, where they will take on Campbell (Nov. 21) and the hosts (Nov. 22).

Additional key non-conference games include a Nov. 29 home game against in-state rival Stephen F. Austin, a trip to Jonesboro, Arkansas, to take on Arkansas State, a road trip to Edinburg, Texas, to take on UTRGV (Dec. 11), a Dec. 17 trip to ACC foe Stanford and a road tilt at Oral Roberts (Dec. 22) in Tulsa.

Then comes the league slate, which looks a bit different than it has in the past, thanks in part to the seven-team membership. UTA will play each of the other six schools three times each for a total of 18 league contests before the WAC Championships in Las Vegas at the Orleans from March 11-14. The Mavs get Tarleton State, California Baptist and Southern Utah at home twice, while they travel to ACU, Utah Tech and Utah Valley twice.
