ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington suffered a 25-20, 25-19, 25-19, loss to TCU on Saturday night in the final match of the UTA Hilton Invitational in front of 486 fans at Texas Hall. The Mavericks (4-8) couldn't overcome seven service errors and 10 aces by the Horned Frogs (12-3) during their only loss in their final non-conference weekend.
"Well, obviously I'm disappointed," UT Arlington head coach Diane Seymour said. "Usually it is a barnburner with TCU where it goes at least four or sometimes five sets. It was kind of a weird night where neither team was very crisp. I didn't feel like we had a whole lot of bounces go our way."
Junior Bianca Sauls and sophomore Tara Frantz were named to the all-tournament team. Frantz led the Mavericks averaging 2.91 kills per set and added six blocks and three assists while Sauls hit .221, averaging 2.09 kills per set and led the team averaging 3.45 digs per set in tournament action.
UT Arlington's defense recorded 31 digs in the first set during the Horned Frogs' 25-20 win. Raegan Daniel led the way with nine digs and Teena Sobczak and Sauls also collected eight. Frantz had six kills on eight swings in the first set.
Frantz finished the match leading all players with 15 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Daniel posted her team-leading fifth double-double of the season with 25 assists and 12 digs. Sauls and Sobczak led the Mavericks with 13 digs apiece. In addition, Alicia Shaffer had 11 kills, seven digs and three blocks for the Mavs.
Frantz followed up a successful first set with four kills in eight attacks in the second frame. Shaffer added four kills with 11 swings. TCU posted the second-set win behind three additional aces, giving them seven after two sets of action.
"Raegan has been doing a great job getting me sets to allow me to be successful," Frantz said. "I try and listen a lot to my back row, but when I can't hear them I just try to take strong swings."
TCU held strong in the third set with a 25-19 win, despite four ties and two lead changes in the frame.
"TCU is a very aggressive serving team," Seymour said. "And I think that is something we needed to see before conference get's going. I do believe this is one of the best serving teams we have seen this season."
UT Arlington will open Southland Conference play next week hosting UTSA (Sept. 24) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Sept. 26) at Texas Hall.
