NACOGDOCHES, Tex. - Alicia Shaffer continued her hot streak by tallying a career-high 43 digs to guide UT Arlington to a 3-2 road win over Stephen F. Austin.
Shaffer's 43 digs are the most by a player in a Southland Conference match this season. It also marked her third 30-dig match in the last four and helped the Mavericks come back from losing two of the first three to earn their 19-25, 25-17, 21-25, 25-18, 15-10 victory Wednesday night at Johnson Coliseum.
"It was a great defensive performance for our team, for sure," UTA coach Diane Seymour said. "We had over 100 digs. That was one of the things that we talked about coming into to this - if we would control our hitting errors and control our service errors and control our receiving errors, good things would happen. We did that tonight and then we knew we could beat them."
UT Arlington's win snapped Stephen F. Austin's 10-match winning streak in the series. It also marked the first time UTA (11-14, 5-6) won in Nacogdoches since 2000.
The Mavericks stole the momentum of the match in the fourth set when they broke a 6-6 tie by scoring 11 of the next 12 points. They went on to win the Game 4 before closing strong in the fifth.
In Game 5, the Mavs jumped out to an 8-6 lead by the switch, but the Ladyjacks rallied to tie the set at 10. UT Arlington rattled off five of the next six points to close out the match.
"It was a very good effort from our team and it showed that we could be very resilient in a tough match on the road," Seymour said.
Though Shaffer stole the spotlight, several Mavericks turned in fantastic performances.
Tara Frantz returned from a two-match absence to set a career high with 19 kills.
Senior setter Raegan Daniel also set a career high with 54 assists and added 16 digs to finish with a double-double.
Amanda Aguilera also earned her second-career 20-20 match, finishing with 23 kills and 23 digs.
Bianca Sauls finished just shy of a double-double, notching nine kills and 19 digs.
Emily Shearin added nine kills and five blocks and fellow middle blocker Christy Driscoll finished with five kills and five blocks.
Seymour said getting Shearin and Driscoll more involved in the offense in the final two games helped turn the match in the Mavericks' favor.
"I think that's when we were able to separate ourselves a little bit," Seymour said.
Kendall Whitson was the fifth Maverick in double-digit digs, finishing with 11.
The win gave the Mavericks a season split with the Ladyjacks, who won the first match at Texas Hall. UTA jumped ahead of Stephen F. Austin (11-15, 4-7) in the overall standings with the win.
Arielle Daron led the Ladyjacks with 18 kills.
The Mavericks return to the court Saturday afternoon when they travel to Sam Houston to conclude their four-match road trip. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
"Hopefully tonight's game leads to some good things on Saturday," Seymour said.
