Arlington, Tex. - LaMarcus Reed scored a career-high 22 points to lead UT Arlington to a 67-52 win over St. Edward's Saturday night.
UT Arlington went over five minutes during the second half without a field goal and St. Edward's took advantage of that to cut the lead to six before Reed hit a 3-pointer to give the Mavericks a nine-point lead. UTA then went onto increase the lead to as much as 12 from there to take control of the game.
"It wasn't the prettiest win but we will take it anyways," UTA head coach Scott Cross said. "We did do some things well but we also need to work on a few things."
The victory puts the Mavericks record at 5-1 which ties for the fourth best in start in school history. The best was three years ago when UTA started the year 8-0 on their way to the NCAA Tournament.
Reed was one of three UTA players in double figures as Jordan Reves and Cameron Catlett each had 10 points. Remy Boswell led St. Edward's (3-2) with 18 points.
"I was trying to be a little more aggressive tonight," Reed said, who came into the game off a season-low 10 points vs. Hardin-Simmons Tuesday. "I think it paid off by having 22 tonight."
The junior made 7-of-13 from the field and also added five rebounds and two assists.
It was the third consecutive game in double figures for Reves but it could have been more as he went 4-of-13 from the field. The sophomore also added a team-high nine rebounds.
"We missed a few layups tonight and that kept our point total down," Cross said.
Cross was forced to play some players in different positions early on as Bo Ingram, who had 19 points in each of the previous two games, got into early foul trouble with three in the first three minutes.
"Bo being out made us put some guys in spots they have not spent a lot time in," Cross said. "But it was a good learning experience for them."
Ingram did finish with seven points and four rebounds before fouling out in just 12 minutes.
The Mavericks opened up a 17-point lead in the first half, before the Hilltoppers went on a 13-7 run to cut the lead to 11 at the break at 37-26.
UT Arlington was outrebounded 43-40 which was the first time that has happened to the Mavericks this season.
"We work hard on our rebounding in practice and this is the first time we have been outrebounded," Cross said. "We know if we make shots and rebound the ball we will be in games and win our fair share of them."
UTA did hold St. Edward's to just 29.6% (16-of-54) from the field and have now all six opponents under 40% from the field this season. The Mavs also turned 19 SEU turnovers into 25 points and held a 16-0 advantage in fast break points.
UT Arlington plays next at North Texas on Tuesday, Nov. 30. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
