Lawrence, Kan. - The three Kansas big men proved to be too much for the Mavericks as they lost 82-57 in Lawrence.
Thomas Robinson scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the third-ranked Jayhawks. Markieff Morris added 14 points and five rebounds for KU while his twin brother Marcus had 13 and six rebounds.
The Mavericks had trouble all game keeping Kansas off the boards as KU finished the game with a 41-25 advantage in rebounding. That helped Kansas go on to a 22-5 advantage in second chance points which was the difference in the game.
UTA started out strong in the game as they took an early lead and the game was tied at 18 before Kansas went on an 18-10 run at the end of the half to take a 36-28 lead at the break.
The second half was where the Jayhawks showed why they are so highly ranked. Kansas began the half on a 19-9 run to take control of the game and finished shooting 55.2% in the final 20 minutes. Meanwhile, the Mavericks struggled from the field making just 12-of-31 (38.7) as they were outscored 46-29. After that early run, the Mavericks could get no closer than 12 points.
"That was about as close as we could have played them in the first half," UT Arlington head coach Scott Cross said. "But in the second half, when they made their run, we lost some of our intensity at times and they took advantage of that."
Bo Ingram led UT Arlington with a career-high 20 points and also grabbed a team-high five rebounds. He was 8-12 from the field which included going 4-7 from 3-point range. Cameron Catlett added 10 for the Mavericks. No other Maverick had more than six points.
"They are one of the best two teams in the nation and at times we played well," Cross said. "We need to take the positives out of this game and continue to move forward as we finish off the non-conference schedule and then get ready for Southland play."
The Jayhawks had a decided lead in foul shooting as they made 16-23 while UTA was just 4-9 which was a season-low for the Mavericks. UTA committed only 16 fouls but a majority of them came while Kansas was in the act of shooting.
Brandon Edwards added three blocks and three steals to go along with four points and five rebounds for UTA.
The Mavericks will finish off 2010 with a game at Arkansas Friday night at 7 p.m.
