Mavericks wrap up Northwestern Invitational

ARLINGTON, Texas - UTA track and field wrapped up their weekend at the Northwestern Invitational with a handful of first place finishers.

The women started off the day strong with a second place finished from Jasmine Walls in the 200 meter dash. Not far behind Walls was Antonia Hopkins. Walls finished with a time of 23.21 and Hopkins finished fourth with a time of 23.61. Also running in the 200 meter dash was Kimberly Strong (26.97) and Raquel Kilgore (27.44).

Hopkins then ran in the 400 meter dash where she finished second with a time of 54.39. Close behind Hopkins was DeAndrea Smith (56.25) and Brittany Culbertson (56.76). Smith finished seventh and Culbertson finished ninth.

The men were not to be outdone in the short sprints. Lionel Mungwari made huge improvements in the 100, 200 and long jump. The freshman ran a 10.44 in the 100 meters for a fourth place finish, recorded a sixth place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 21.47, and placed fourth overall in the long jump with a jump of 7.39m. Freshman Keaton Mata also had a great meet improving on his previous long jump mark by almost two feet. Mata recorded a jump of 7.34m, good for a fifth place finish.Andrew Pettis (10.76) and Marco Adriana (10.77) finished 12th and 13th respectively in the 100.

Close behind Mungwari in the 200 meter dash was Marco Adriana and Renan Palma. Adriana (21.54) finished seventh and Palma (21.67) finished 11th.

The men's 800 meter run saw five Mavericks finish in the top twelve. Dwight Robinson (1:50.90) came in first and was followed by Anthony Rene (1:54.79), Zach Davis (1:55.01), Andrew Knipp (1:56.91), and Tomahl Woods (2:00.04).

The women tried to continue their dominance of the long distance runs as well. Esther Abuto finished first in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:12.72. Following Abuto was Perri Ford (2:19.69), finishing sixth, and Danisha Hicks (2:20.37), finishing seventh.

Jerono Patrober continued to lead the field in the long distance runs too. Patrober pulled in first place in the 1500 meter run as well as the 5000 meter run. Her time in the 5000 meter run, 17:59.67, was a full thirty seconds ahead of the closest runner.

Coming in close behind Patrober in the 1500 meters was teammate Caroline Erlingson (4:50.89). The Mavericks also finished one-two in the 5000 meter run with Amanda MaMahon placing second with a time of 18:29.75.

The men found similar success in the long distance runs. Ozie Hood (4:01.45) and Heinz Schwarzkopf (4:03.82) finished second and third respectively in the 1500 meter run and Zach Zura finished fifth in the 500 meter run with a time of 16:16.03.

Hurdler Aundrea Williams finished first in the 400 meter hurdles, edging out second place my a mere one hundredth of a second. Finishing behind Williams (52.13) was Cameron Chandler (15.57) in ninth.

The women found similar success in the 400 meter hurdles as Megan Turner (1:03.97) and Doxie Thompson (1:04.01) finished second and third, respectively.

The women's 4x400 relay team, composed of Smith, Culbertson, Shannon Reynolds and Turner claimed first place in the event with a time of 3:45.97.

The men's 4x100 relay team finished second behind Louisiana Tech with a time of 40.37. The 4x400 team also came in second with a time of 3:13.15.

Isiah Clements continued his dominance of the high jump with a height of 2.06 meters. That was good enough for first place.

Wade Hayes also came through in the pole vault finishing second in the pole vault with a height of 5.00 meters.

Rounding out the field events for the men was Ivan Storic and the javelin throw. Storic placed third with a distance of 65.35 meters.

The Mavericks will begin their final leg of training for the Conference Championships, which will be held at Mavericks Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
