Golf finishes fifth at UTA/Waterchase Invitational

Arlington, Tex. - The University of Texas at Arlington men's golf team finished their first tournament of the season in fifth place at the UTA/Waterchase Invitational in Fort Worth Tuesday.

The Mavericks were in sixth heading into the final round before carding a one-under 287 to move up one spot in the tournament.

Senior Wes Worster led the way for UTA Tuesday with a 6-under 66 to finish even par and in a tie for 12th. Zack Fischer was the top player for the Mavericks as he finished in a tie for ninth after shooting a 4-over 76 Tuesday.

Paul McConnell finished in a tie for 24th after a 2-over 74 while Brad Lyle was in a tie for 37th after he shot a one-under 71 Tuesday to finish at 9-over 221. Carson Kallis registered a 77 in the final round and finished in a tie for 86th at 233.

"We played better as the tournament went on," UT Arlington head coach Jay Rees said. "We need to keep working and getting better heading into the remainder of the fall schedule."

The Mavericks also had another team in the tournament and that group of five finished in a tie for sixth with Santa Clara.

Freshman Enrique Livas led that team with an even-par total of 216 after shooting a 2-under 70 on Tuesday. Jesse Gibson, another freshman, finished in a tie for 18th at 2-over 218 after shooting 75 in the final round.

Jamey Taylor helped the UTA "Orange" team by also shooting a 2-under 70 Tuesday. He finished in a tie for 30th after finishing at 220. Cameron Hollek (T37, 221) and Hunter Brown (T75, 228) rounded out the Mavericks second team.

North Texas won the tournament after shooting an even par 288. The Mean Green cruised to a 21 shot victory as they finished with a team total of 20-under 844. Southern Mississippi was second at 865 while Louisiana Tech was third at 867.

UNT's Curtis Donahoe and Southern Mississippi's Derek Plucienski tied for the individual medalist honors after each shot a 7-under 209. Donahoe shot 73 on Tuesday while Plucienski carded a 76.

The Mavericks next travel to the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic in Notre Dame, Indiana next Monday and Tuesday.
