CORPUS CHRISTI, Tex. - Nothing has come easy away from Texas Hall for UT Arlington this season. Why, then, should the Mavericks' first road win have been any different?
UT Arlington trailed 2-1 in the match and had to storm back for a 25-23 win in Game 4 just to force a fifth set. The Mavs then needed to survive a tightly contested fifth set to come away with a 3-2 victory Saturday afternoon at Dugan Wellness Center.
The match marked the 100th career win for UTA coach Diane Seymour.
"I think today was all about finding that confidence to make that big swing when we needed it," Seymour said. "Hopefully we gained some confidence in coming back in the fourth and fifth set."
Amanda Aguilera notched her 16th career double-double, setting a career high in digs in the process, leading the Mavs to their 21-25, 25-14, 24-26, 25-23, 15-11 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Aguilera, who ended the match with a kill, went 20-20 for the first time in her career, finishing with 20 kills and 24 digs.
"Amanda was unbelievable today," Seymour said. "She's learning every time she takes a swing. We have a chance to win the match at 14-10 (in the fifth game) and she gets blocked. We immediately come back and set her again and she comes back with a great swing to win the match. So she's learning quickly."
Daniel distributed her 45 assists evenly, enabling every starting UTA starting hitter to tally at least seven kills.
Tara Frantz and Christy Driscoll both notched 11 kills. Driscoll added six blocks as well.
Still, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi had a chance to steal a win despite getting out-hit .196-.136.
Emma Ridley and Micah Nolan kept the Islanders (6-0, 0-2) in the match, coming up with 29 and 25 digs, respectively. Ridley also had 20 kills.
The Mavs (7-9, 1-1) were better defensively.
Libero Alicia Shaffer led the way, posting exactly 25 digs for a third consecutive match.
"She's passing the ball extremely well and she's starting to read extremely well, too, which is why she's been able to dig more balls," Seymour said.
Bianca Sauls, Kendall Whitson and Daniel produced 15, 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
Sauls also had nine kills.
Emily Shearin earned eight kills and a match-high eight blocks for a Mavs defense that posted 15.
Seymour said after the win that she is very happy with the way her starters are playing.
"Bianca continued to play with a lot of heart and is leading this team with emotion and it's starting to catch on," Seymour said. "I thought Christy was very good today as well and she played well Thursday night when we lost at UTSA. Raegan's distributing the ball very well, especially when you look and see we have four starters hitting over .200.
"You're seeing our seniors take a big step forward. They're not going to be denied this year."
The Mavs will look to build on their road win Thursday night when they travel to McNeese State for a 7 p.m. match.
