Arlington, Texas - The Mavericks wrapped up day one of the Sooner Fall Invitational with several big wins and look to carry their momentum into the final two days of competition.
"Once again we proved that we can compete with the best players in the country and win," said Assistant Coach Marco Matteucci. "Depaul University is currently ranked 34 in the nation by the ITA rankings and we won every match we played against them so far. I feel confident that the girls will continue with a positive fall and be the team to beat in the Southland Conference," Matteucci said.
Natalia Mayuk dropped a hard-fought three set decision to CC Sardinha of Oklahoma State by scores of 6-3, 1-6 and 6-4. Mayuk moves to the consolation bracket to face Samantha Adams of Texas Tech tomorrow.
Linda Aqvist earned her first win of tournament play against DePaul's Christiana Raymond 6-3, 6-2. Aqvist faces Malika Rose of Oklahoma State tomorrow. Giada D'ortona also advanced to the next round after winning her match with a score of 6-0, 6-0 over Samantha Kaneta of DePaul. D'ortona will go head-to-head against North Texas's Amy Joubert.
"Linda and Giada are getting use to the college environment and are playing better matches. Natalia keeps on playing some of the best quality matches the program has had in the last couple of years," said Matteucci.
Senior Monika Hadvigerova earned her first win of the fall season against DePaul's Cali Gustafson, 6-0, 7-5. Hadvigerova moves to the next round where she will face Carolina Barboza of North Texas.
"I am extremely happy with today's outcome. Monika is getting back to her winning ways after struggling the previous season with a wrist injury," added Matteucci.
In doubles action, duo Mayuk and Aqvist dropped a close 9-7 decision over Nadia Lee and Amy Joubert of North Texas. The tandem earned a bye in the consolation bracket and will face Arkansas-Little Rock's Nathalia Garay and Veronique Luksich.
Hadvigerova and D'ortona suffered an 8-6 decision against Tulsa's Anastasia Erofeeva and Bonny Davidson. The duo came back in the consolation bracket earning a 9-7 win over Cali Gustafson and DePaul's Christiana Raymond. The tandem will be back in action Sunday.
