Arlington, Texas - The UT Arlington men's tennis team recorded a pair of home wins against Centenary and Cameron University Friday afternoon at the UTA Tennis Center. With the wins, the Mavericks improved to 2-1 overall.
Centenary at UT Arlington
Ice on the UTA Tennis Courts lead to a delayed start for the UT Arlington men's tennis team, but they still pulled off a 5-0 win over Centenary Friday afternoon.
"The guys did pretty well, despite not being able to play all the singles matches," said head coach Diego Benitez. "Our team is at a very good level compared to Centenary. I think we are a very solid team."
Doubles competition went quickly with the Mavericks winning all three matches.
In the top doubles flight, Erik Hjertonsson and David Subirats defeated Jonathan Threadgill and Michah Threadgill with an 8-0 victory.
Lucas Leppin and Brieuc Hamon recorded an 8-0 win against Garret Whipple and Evan Magill in the No. 2 position.
Giacomo Sano and Jason Lateko defeated Sam Grace and Michael Reeks by an 8-0 decision in the No. 3 flight.
Only four of the six singles matches were played with the Mavs earning all four wins.
Yauheni Yakauleu went back and forth with Jonathan Threadgill but was able to come up with the victory going 6-4 in the first set and 6-2 in the second.
Hjertonsson took care of business in the No. 2 singles spot, recording a 6-2, 6-3 win over Michah Threadgill.
Nicholas Moreno recorded his first win of the season against Garrett Whipple, 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 3 singles spot.
Senior Brieuc Hamon defeated Evan Magill easily with a final score of 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 4 position.
Cameron at UT Arlington
The UT Arlington men's tennis team was able to get their second win on the day defeating Cameron 6-1 Friday afternoon at the UTA Tennis Center.
"Our team was ready to play. Cameron gave us a really good fight. They took one doubles match from us and the others were tight. I think our players are more experienced and they knew how to make the difference in the match," Benitez said.
Yakauleu and Hjertonsson were the duo who battled against Santiago Romero and Patrick Eichler on the top doubles flight. The tandem dropped a hard fought 9-8 decision.
Subirats and Moreno had a close match against Duje Janjic and Thomas Peixoto but were able to get an 8-6 win.
In No. 3 doubles, Hamon and Leppin had an easier time winning an 8-4 decision against Manuel Barroetavena and Nicolas Clerc.
UTA moved onto singles were the Mavericks dominated in grand fashion, recording victories in No. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 flights.
Two were taken into a tie breaker where Yauheni Yakauleu lost the first set 3-6, recovering in the second winning 6-3 and then finally getting the win after 10 rounds in the tie breaker against Santiago Romero.
Leppin recorded a 6-2, 6-3 win against Eichl in the No. 2 singles spot while Hjertonsson had the easiest time winning both of the sets 6-2 over Thomas Peixoto.
Hamon battled in the first set against Janjic but won the first set 7-6 and cleaning up 6-3 in the second.
Subirats wrapped up the No. 5 singles spot with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Barroetavena.
The only loss came from Moreno in the sixth flight, falling 4-6, 6-2 against Clerc.
The Mavericks will now travel to Wichita State on Friday, February 18. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
"Wichita State will be a tough match but we are looking forward to it. "We will try to do our best and hopefully come up with the win," Benitez said.
