Victoria, Tex. - Jim West Intercollegiate Day One Results
The UT Arlington golf team wants to have a good showing in its final regular season tournament of the season as they are looking to defend their title at the Jim West Intercollegiate.
Sunday's first round belonged to the Mavericks' Wes Worster as he fired a four-under par 68 to take the individual lead in the tournament. Meanwhile, none of his teammates finished better than in a tie for 42nd and the team is in eighth place after day one.
"Wes played really well today," UTA head coach Jay Rees said. "He was down the leaderboard last week and it was good to see him have a good round today. We need a few of the others to play better if we are going to get back into contention and defend our title here."
Worster's round was highlight by a stretch of five consecutive birdies from holes four through eight. Overall he made six birdies Sunday and he goes into Monday's second round with a one shot lead over Andrew Noto of UL Lafayette.
Zack Fischer carded a five-over par 77 and is in a tie for 42nd. Others in the Mavericks lineup included Hunter Brown (+6, T52nd), Enrique Livas (+7, T56th) and Paul McConnell (+8, T65th).
Two UTA players are competing as individuals as well. Carson Kallis is in a tie for 42nd after a 77 and Brian Smith is in a tie for 65th as he shot 80.
The Mavericks will be chasing Louisiana Tech Monday as they lead the tournament after the first day with a one-under team total.
