Arlington, Texas - UT Arlington senior Daiana Negreanu has been named the Southland Conference women's tennis player of the week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Negreanu, a native of Alexandria, Romania (Grupul), recorded a perfect 2-0 singles and 2-0 doubles record in her final two homes matches at the No. 1 position. Negreanu helped the Mavericks to an unblemished 9-0 conference record and a 15-4 overall mark with wins over North Texas and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The senior opened the week off with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Barbora Vykydalova of North Texas, then followed with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 win over A&M-Corpus Christi's Mirna Cicak. She also recorded a pair of wins in doubles action with teammate Linda Aqvist.
It was the second time this season Negreanu was selected player of the week.
Honorable mention this week goes to Lamar senior Mariaryeni Gutierrez, Texas State sophomore Melissa Hadad and Nicholls senior Natalia Zamora. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland men's tennis sports information directors.
Each school's SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
