Arlington, Texas - UT Arlington freshman Linda Aqvist has been named the Southland Conference women's tennis player of the week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Aqvist, a native of Gothenburg, Sweeden, finished the regular season by going 2-0 in both singles and doubles play this past weekend in 7-0 victories over Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls. UT Arlington also clinched the regular season championship with a perfect 11-0 conference record.
Aqvist defeated Southeastern Louisiana's Laura Verges 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and then teamed with Daiana Negreanu to beat Audrey Chelini and Raissa Dias 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. On Sunday, Aqvist took down Nicholls' Natalia Zamora 7-6, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and paired with Negreanu once again to beat Florina Nosca and Marina Ljoshevska 8-2 at No. 1 doubles.
Aqvist finished the regular season with a 10-1 conference record at the No. 2 position and recorded a 15-5 overall mark. The freshman also finished with an 8-1 league mark in doubles competition.
This marks the first time this season Aqvist was selected player of the week.
Honorable mention this week goes to Texas State freshman Jessica Kahts, Lamar senior Mariaryeni Gutierrez, Northwestern State senior Kathrin Lange and UTSA sophomore Kavya Menon. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland men's tennis sports information directors.
Each school's SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
