Final Stats
UTA at Univ. of British Columbia
VANCOUVER, B.C. - UT Arlington aced its biggest test of the Canadian summer tour thus far, blowing past University of British Columbia 108-60 Friday night at War Memorial Gym.
The Thunderbirds were a No. 1 seed and Final Four team in the CIS Tournament last year - the Canadian version of the NCAA Tournament.
They were little match for UT Arlington, though, which rattled off its third win in as many nights.
"I thought we really shot the ball well and made some improvements defensively," UTA coach Scott Cross said. "I'm not worried about the other teams. It's just about us and us getting better. I think we've done that. We're playing really fast. Guys are sharing the ball. Different guys are stepping up and hitting shots every night. That's really good for us."
For a third straight night, a balanced attack served as the Mavericks' calling card. Five UTA players finished with double-digit point totals.
Bradley Gay led the Mavericks with 19 points. Kevin Butler scored 17 points despite sitting out the entire fourth quarter.
Jorge Redmon poured in 15 points. Cameron Catlett and LaMarcus Reed III chipped in with STAT and 14 points, respectively. Reed also added six rebounds.
UTA found its stroke early, knocking down 58 percent of its shots from the floor, including 12 of 20 3-pointers. Gay, Catlett and Redmon combined to shoot 8 of 10 on 3-pointers.
"They were shooting it really well," Cross said. "Cameron shot the ball exceptionally well. He's been good shooting it all three games for us. That's a positive thing for us. All of our guys are great shooting and we've got great quickness. If we play the way we did today we could have a great season."
Shaquille White-Miller again excelled in facilitating the balanced offense, turning in seven assists.
The Mavs led 32-17 after the first quarter and were never in jeopardy of letting the lead slip away. They also topped the century mark for the third consecutive night.
UT Arlington returns to the court Saturday afternoon when it plays Douglas College. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m., CST. The Mavericks will leave Vancouver after the game to head to Whistler.
