Photo Gallery ARLINGTON, Tex. - Tara Frantz led a balanced UT Arlington attack to beat Louisiana-Lafayette 3-0 Friday night at in the season opener at Texas Hall.
Three Mavericks (3-9) finished with at least 10 digs in leading them to a 25-22, 25-17, 25-18 victory.
Alicia Shaffer tallied 19 digs to lead the Mavericks, who held the Ragin' Cajuns to a .123 hitting percentage in the match.
"She made my job a lot easier," setter Amanda Welsh said. "I was able to get the ball to anybody I wanted."
Welsh, playing in her first home match, made her own job look easy, dishing out 31 assists while also finishing with 10 digs.
Amanda Aguilera had nine of those kills to go along with her 13 digs.
Charae Grosser added eight kills and Eld-hah Kaswatuka had five kills.
Tonice White led Louisiana-Lafayette (6-7) with 12 kills.
UT Arlington won a tightly contested first set that featured five ties and two lead changes. The second set was tied as late as 15-15 before the Mavericks rode a 10-2 rally to take the game. The Mavs carried that momentum to a comfortable third-set win.
Before the match, head coach Diane Seymour was attended to by the UT Arlington athletic training staff. She was transported to Arlington Memorial Hospital where she is in stable condition. Her medical condition is currently being treated.
"Any time something like that happens, it's jarring - especially to good people like our players," assistant coach Erin Clute said. "I thought they handled themselves very well - almost like, `OK, there's a job to be done. We're going to get down to business.' I think that speaks volumes about their maturity. I'm very proud of how strong we were as a unit tonight."
The Mavericks continue the UT Arlington Hilton Invitational on Saturday when they play Prairie View A&M at 1:30 p.m. and Texas Tech at 7:30 p.m. at Texas Hall.
