Volleyball drops matches to Tulsa, UC Davis

Sept. 2, 2011

Final Stats

TULSA, Okla. - UT Arlington lost both matches on the first day of the Hurricane Invitational on Friday at Tulsa.

The Mavericks fell in straight sets to both Tulsa and UC Davis. They have now lost six five consecutive matches.

"Obviously right now we are in a horrendous losing streak," UTA coach Diane Seymour said. "We really need to get our blocking and our defense back on track. Hopefully we can use this as a learning experience because you can go on a losing streak at any time - whether it's in conference or during preseason tournaments."

UC Davis dealt UT Arlington a 3-0 loss (25-19, 25-10, 25-23) by hitting .301, including a .727 clip in the second set.

Tara Frantz paced the UTA attack with 10 kills. Emily Shearin and Eld-hah Kaswatuka added six kills each.

Alicia Shaffer's 12 digs marked the team high on defense.

However, the Mavericks struggled to block shots. They managed just two blocks in each of the two matches on Friday.

"We have to find a way to be more productive blocks-wise," Seymour said. "I don't know what we can do to turn around our blocking game overnight, but it's becoming apparent that we need to do something quickly."

UT Arlington fell 3-0 to Tulsa earlier in the day.

The Golden Hurricanes won in straight sets, 25-17, 25-18, 25-11. The Mavericks had a hard time with Tulsa's service game, which produced eight aces.

Frantz led the Mavericks with 14 kills on 29 attempts and finished with a .414 attack percentage. Amanda Aguilera also added eight kills and seven digs.

Defensively, Alicia Shaffer led the way with 17 digs.

Tyler Henderson led Tulsa with 20 kills on 29 attempts.

UT Arlington plays two more matches on Saturday, starting with a 10 a.m. contest against North Dakota State. The Mavs play Arkansas-Pine Bluff later Saturday.
