Arlington, Texas - Sophomore women's tennis player Giana D'ortona won the consolation draw and defeated multiple Texas Longhorns this weekend at The University of Texas Fall Invitational in Austin, Texas.
After losing her opening match to Texas player Cierra Gaytan-Leach, D'ortona won her next two matches to make it to the consolation final draw.
"Giada played extremely smart tennis all weekend and I'm really happy for her success this at this tournament," said assistant coach Marco Matteucci. "She took every match one at a time without looking too far ahead and did a great job maintaining her focus throughout the weekend."
"I'm also happy for our freshman getting their first wins in college and the way we played doubles."
In the finals, she dominated Annat Rabinovich of Texas with scores of 6-3, 6-2 to become the consolation champion.
Natalia Mayak, who recorded a perfect 11-0 in Southland Conference play last season, won her first match 6-4, 6-1. She followed up with a quarterfinal loss to the University of San Diego's Juliette Coupez, who won first place in the tournament.
D'ortona and Mayak also played well in doubles, going 2-2 over the weekend. They recorded 8-6 wins against doubles teams from Rice and Texas. The duos losses came against teams from Texas Tech by scores of 8-3.
The women's tennis team plays again Oct. 1st at the ITA/Riviera All-American Tennis Championships. Times and draws are yet to be determined for the nine-day tournament.
