The race will take place at Vandergriff Park in Arlington. The women are set to begin their 2-mile event at 8 a.m., while the men will run a 3-mile circuit at 8:15 a.m. Competing schools include: UT Arlington, Baylor, North Texas, SMU (women), Texas Wesleyan and Northwood.
Virgilio Martinez, an Arlington High graduate, is expected to be one of the top runners for a men's team that features an abundance of depth. Senior Cody Widener is the squad's top returner.
For the women, freshman Gabriela Alfonzo, a 16-year-old from Venezuela, figures to be one to watch in her collegiate debut. Hannah Nilsson headlines a group of five returnees, all of whom are sophomores.
"We're looking forward to strong seasons from both our men's and women's teams and are very excited to kick off our year at home," head coach John Sauerhage said.
The Gerald Richey Invitational, a high school meet, will follow the college division races. Vandergriff Park will be the site of the 2012 UIL Region II Cross Country Meet, hosted by UT Arlington, on Nov. 3.
