SAN MARCOS, Texas- An overtime win over Texas State gave UT Arlington its second Western Athletic Conference win of the season. The Mavericks on defeated the Bobcats 73-72 Thursday night in the Strahan Coliseum.
"I thought we battled really hard," UT Arlington coach Samantha Morrow said. "We had a lot of girls in foul trouble and our bench came in and held us within sticking distance.
"We did the little things at the right time. It wasn't a beautiful game on either side and knocked down some threes and we did a better job in the second half."
Desherra Nwanguma had 14 points, marking the fifth consecutive game she has scored in double figures. Jordan Holub scored a career-high 10 points against the Bobcats. Kiara Parker picked up a double-double, leading the team with 12 rebounds and 10 points.
The Mavericks started the game with a long two-pointer from Holub and Aron Garcia grabbed bucket to give UTA a 4-0 lead.
Texas State took a 7-6 lead after a three-point play from leading scorer Diamond Ford. Both teams continued to score until back-to-back 3-pointers from the Bobcats gave Texas State a 19-12 lead.
The Bobcats pulled ahead with a 10-point lead, but Laila Suleiman hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to seven. The Mavs climbed within three points, but Texas State pulled ahead by 10, as the teams headed into the locker room with the Bobcats leading 40-30.
Texas State scored two 3-pointers early in the second half, extending its lead to 12. Garcia grabbed a steal and a breakaway layup for the Mavs to close the gap 49-45. Suleiman knocked down her third 3-pointer of the game to put the Mavs within one.
Rosalyn Thorpe tied it up with free-throw line jumper and Suleiman knocked down another 3-pointer to give the Mavs their first lead of the second half (53-50). Ford tied the game with her own 3-pointer.
The Bobcats took the lead again, but UTA kept the score close. Nwanguma scored to give the Mavs a one-point, but a free throw for the Bobcats tied the score. Erin People grabbed a bucket to give the Bobcats a 65-63 lead with 18.3 to play in the game, but Chauntandra Williams tied it up to end regulation.
The Mavericks took an early 71-67 lead, but Ford continued to shine for the Bobcats and Ayriel Anderson gave Texas State a 72-71 lead with 0:28 to play in overtime. Williams then drove to the basket with a no-look layup giving the Mavericks the 73-72 victory.
The game finished with 12 lead changes and tied seven times. Texas State's Ford led both teams with 26 points
The Mavericks travel to San Antonio to take on UTSA Saturday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m.
