SAN JOSE, Calif. - The UT Arlington Mavericks lost 1-0 in a 14-inning Western Athletic Conference pitching duel Friday to the San Jose State Spartans.
After their 11th extra-inning game of the season, the Mavericks dropped to 18-22 overall and 3-11 in conference play, while the Spartans moved to 32-14 and 10-3 in the WAC.
"Talent-wise, we can play with anybody," UT Arlington coach Fox said. "Right now, what's missing is the fight and the will to come out on top. This will come with time."
Nina Villanueva, Teri Lyles and Jolene Schaefer each had two hits on the day for the Mavs. Lyles trough five strikeouts and dropped to 16-9 on the season.
"Lyles stayed strong," Fox said. "She threw to the zone the umpire wanted and did really well."
Through six complete innings the Mavs and the Spartans each had four hits.
Rebecca Stokes led off the top of the seventh for the Mavericks reaching after she was hit by the pitch. Thompson reached on a fielder's choice and the Mavs had two runners on with one out, but SJSU was able to get out of the inning.
In the top of the eighth, Villanueva reached second base one a throwing error by SJSU's third baseman, but the next three batters were unable to push Villanueva any further.
In the bottom of the 14th with one runner on, San Jose State reached on an error by second baseman Kallan Thompson and the winning run crossed the plate.
The Mavericks and the Spartans are back in action Saturday at 2 p.m. CT with a doubleheader to end the series.
