ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington Mavericks capped off a strong week of play on Sunday as they swept Appalachian State (25-23, 25-15, 25-21) to wrap up a 3-0 week. The result marked the eighth straight victory at College Park Center and the third sweep in a row for the Mavs.
Sunday was also UTA's alumni match, as members of the 1989 Final Four volleyball team were honored at intermission.
"We've had a tough week of competition and to get three sweeps is amazing and does say something about how it was a total team effort," UT Arlington coach Diane Seymour said. "What we've been talking about over the course of this week with these three matches that have all been tight and close and we just really wanted to focus on ourselves, not what they are doing on the other side, but being really sharp and focused on our technique and playing our style of volleyball."
The win improves UTA's record to 16-5 this season and 6-3 in the Sun Belt, while App State falls to 15-4 and 5-4.
Qiana Canete helped pace the Mavericks as she recorded her 13th double-double of the season with 22 digs and a team-high 10 kills.
"I just tried to take in everything Diane told me," Canete said. "I heard her when I was playing on the court and was just listening to the things she was saying. It was challenging, but when I got to the front row I knew that I had to put the ball in play and listen to my back row."
Briana Sharratt also made her presence known as the sophomore MB put up eight blocks and eight kills to go along with a .333 hitting percentage.
Caitlyn Cooney chipped in defensively with a match-high 25 digs in the three-set match.
As a team the Mavericks hit .177 while holding the Mountaineers to just .068 hitting. UTA also out blocked the Apps 10-5 in the match.
With the first set tied at six, UTA took control with a 5-0 run that put the Mavs up 11-6 after a Cassidy Wheeler kill. The Mountaineers worked to cut the lead down to one point at 12-11, but 7-3 run that was capped off with a Stacey Koch kill put the Mavs up 19-14. The Apps then came back again to tie the match at 23, but UTA used back to back kills by Taylor Gross and Ashley Bennett to clinch the opening set 25-23.
Sharratt led UTA in the opening frame with four kills and a hitting percentage of .429 to go along with one block. Gross and Canete also got in on the action as the pair each notched three kills in the set. Amanda Welsh helped direct the offense as she recorded seven assists in the set.
With the Mavericks trailing 6-5 early in the second set, UTA made their markas they went on a 9-3 run that put the Mavs up 14-9 after a Koch kill. App State cut the lead down to four points at 16-12, but UTA closed out the set in convincing fashion 25-15 thanks to another 9-3 run that was ended with a block by Hannah Baptiste and Sharratt.
Gross sparked the offensive output in the second set as she recorded four kills for the Mavs. Canete was doing her part offensively and defensively as the freshman OH recorded three kills with a hitting percentage of .429 to go along with eight digs. Cooney also did her part to slow the Mountaineers offense as she recorded eight digs in the set.
The Mavs trailed early in the third set as the Apps took an 11-6 lead. However, UTA responded with an impressive run of scoring eight straight points to take a 14-11 lead off of a Sharratt kill. The Mountaineers made things interesting late as they got within one point of the Mavericks at 22-21, but UTA closed out match 3-0 when a kill by Koch gave the Mavs the set 25-21.
Canete and Sharratt starred in the final set as the duo each recorded four kills. Canete also chipped in nine digs in the final frame. Cooney was all over the court defensively for the Mavs in the final set coming up with 11 digs to help UTA clinch the victory.
"We've played really good volleyball this week and I'm glad we are playing Arkansas State so quickly," Seymour added. "We all have a bad taste in our mouth a week ago up there in Jonesboro so the biggest thing for us is focusing on us and playing as good of volleyball as we can."
The Mavs will return to action on Friday, Oct. 17 against Arkansas State with the match set to begin at 6:30 p.m. at College Park Center.
