MBB: Mairega Clarke joins Jalen Jones in signing class

Nov. 13, 2014

ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington men's basketball coach Scott Cross announced the signing of Mairega Clarke to a national letter of intent on Friday. Cross previously announced the addition of Jalen Jones. Both are set to join the Mavericks for the 2015-16 season.

Mairega Clarke
Carl Albert State College

Trinidad and Tobago
6-5, Guard

Clarke highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2cSQsMoTMo

Notable: Played in 28 games at Cal Albert in 2013-14, averaging 18.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists. Shot 49.1 percent from the floor and 82.1 percent at the line. Fourth in the conference in scoring and second in free throw percentage. Named third-team All-Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference. Only freshman named to the all-conference team. Played for head coach Mike St. John and assistant Ronnie Williford.

Coach Cross: "Marienga is a 6-5 guard that can play multiple positions for us. He could play 1-4 and help us in all positions. He is a very talented scorer. He is originally from Trinidad and Tobago, then he moved to New York where he played high school ball. He went to Putnam Science prep school in Connecticut and then went to Carl Albert. Obviously he had a great freshman year. When we hired Coach Mangrum, he was the first person he took me to see. I really like him, he is a guy that is long, athletic, and he can drive a little bit like Lonnie McClanahan. Marienga is also a great shooter. His free throw and field goal percentages show that. He is a very efficient basketball player. I think he really fits into our offense because he can pass, dribble and shoot and he has a good field for the game. He makes his teammates better."

Coach St. John: "Mairega's abilities as an athlete are elevated due to the fact that he is a really good person that strives to do the right things on and off the court every day. Those are two of the greatest qualities that he will add to the UTA basketball program."

Jalen Jones
McLennan Community College
Cedar Hill, Texas
6-3, Guard

Notable: Averaged 13 points and 4.5 rebounds per game as freshman at McLennan. Team finished 28-3 and ranked No. 7 in final NJCAA poll for 2013-14. Named conference Newcomer of the Year and first-team all-conference. Played for head coach Kevin Gill and assistant Jamaal Green. Attended Cedar Hill High School. Named all-district as a junior and senior. Led district in scoring as a senior. Son of Reggie and Sharla Jones.

Coach Cross: "He was an extremely productive player in high school then he went McLennan and was all-conference player his freshman year. I can remember back to September of last year, Coach Young and Coach Patterson told me this guy is really good. So I went down there and watched him. I loved him. He is a tough guy, a guy who fits exactly who we are as a basketball team. Reminds you a lot of Drew Charles, a player that can play multiple positions, and is a great rebounder. Coach Gill has had a lot of guys we've played against on opposing teams. All those guys have always been extremely productive players. They were well coached, so obviously we have an opportunity to sign one of his guys and were extremely excited about it. His assistant, Coach Green, does a great job, too. His guys have been extremely successful at the D1 level, so we are really excited to have Jalen."

Coach Gill: "UTA is getting a great kid and excellent basketball player in Jalen Jones. He will be a great addition to the Maverick program both on the floor and in the classroom. He will bring high character and his warrior-like mentality will be well received."
