ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington women's basketball couldn't hold on to a second-half lead in Saturday evening's 54-49 to Texas State at College Park Center.
With the loss, the Mavericks drop to 3-19 on the season and 2-10 in Sun Belt Conference action. The second-place Bobcats are 8-3 in the conference and 11-11 on the season.
"Overall, I'm proud of how this team played defensively," UT Arlington coach Krista Gerlich said. "We need to score the ball better and I was disappointed with our energy to start the second half, but we turned it around."
Senior Guard Malaika Green scored 14 points, 12 of those points from 3-pointers.
UT Arlington pulled ahead to a 16-9 lead, but back-to-back 3-pointers for Texas State allowed the Bobcats to close the gap to 16-15. Both team struggled from the floor, each shooting less than 30 percent in the first half.
Junior Krioni Bruce came in off to bench to score four points in two minutes to help the Mavericks take a 24-20 lead into the locker room.
Walker opened the second half with a bucket, but Texas State went on a 7-0 run to lead for the first time since the opening basket. Texas State's Kaylan Martin hit three 3-pointers in the second half to give the Bobcats a boost.
The Mavericks were leading 45-44 before Texas State finished the game with a 10-4 run.
UT Arlington is back on the court Wednesday in Jonesboro, Ark. to face Arkansas State at 7:05 p.m.
