Final Stats
SAN DIEGO, California - UT Arlington split the second day of the San Diego Classic II. The Mavericks got off to a slow start with an 8-0 run rule loss to Long Beach State, but turned things around to defeat host team San Diego State 2-1.
"In the Sun Belt we're going to have to play double headers often so being able to have a short memory and overcome a run rule and beat a very good team the next game is a positive thing for us to have moving forward," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "I'm looking for this group to continue to enjoy the wins and not focus on the negative. I think we've done a lot of positive things this year that we need to start building off of."
The Mavericks are 14-14 overall on the season and 1-3 in the tournament.
Long Beach State 8, UT Arlington 0
Freshman Brittany May made her fourth start of the season and second of the San Diego Classic II.
Long Beach State scored three runs off of four hits in the top of the first inning off of May before she was replaced by Callie Collins in the circle. Collins gave up a single to center, allowing the 49ers to score another run before the end of the inning.
The Mavericks went down in order, putting the 49ers back up to the plate. LBSU scored again on a fielder's choice to extend its lead 6-0 in the second inning.
The 49ers went up 7-0 in the third inning on a triple to right field and finished the inning up 8-0. Coach Kristie Fox made several defensive changes to start the fourth inning. Shannon Carrico replaced Collins in the circle, Rebecca Stokes was pulled from the game, Nina Villanueva moved from short stop to first base, Meagan Michele moved from third base to short stop, Shelbi Sikes moved from right field to third base and Mallory Foster entered the game at right field.
UT Arlington 2, San Diego State 1
Britnea Barilli started the game with a leadoff home run to give the Mavericks the early 1-0 lead over the Aztecs. Stokes tripled to right field to open the second inning and scored on a wild pitch to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead.
The Aztecs got on the board in the second inning on a fielder's choice to cut the Mavericks' lead in half.
With the win, sophomore Shannon Carrico improved to 6-4 overall in 12 starts.
"Today was the first day I saw Shannon come out and battle from the first pitch to the last pitch. If she can do that on a regular bases we're going to have a good rest of the season," Fox said.
The Mavericks return to the field Sunday at 12 p.m. CT to take on Harvard as they wrap up play in the San Diego Classic II.
