T&F: Vaughn finishes sixth in 100 meters

June 13, 2014

EUGENE, Ore. - UT Arlington sprinter Clayton Vaughn placed sixth in the 100-meter final Friday evening at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships and will be officially named a first-team All-American following the completion of the event.

Vaughn, one of four non-seniors in the final, posted a clocking of 10.19 in the race. The winning time was 9.97 by Baylor's Trayvon Bromell.

"Clayton's start was a bit off," UTA coach John Sauerhage said. "But he really recovered nicely to finish sixth in a great field. And he'll be ready to go again tomorrow afternoon in the 200."

Vaughn is the fourth athlete under Sauerhage to earn a top-6 finish at the NCAA Championships. The others are: Cornelius Cavitt in the 200 meters (4th, 1996; 4th, 1997), Elston Cawley in the 200 meters (5th, 1996; 6th, 1997) and Romain Martin in the decathlon (3rd, 2012; 6th, 2013).

Vaughn, one of just three athletes in the nation to reach the final in both the 100 meters and 200 meters this year, will conclude his stay at the NCAA Championships by competing in the 200m final Saturday at 4:42 p.m. (CT). The meet is being broadcast on ESPNU.
