ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington men's and women's cross country teams continue their promising 2014 seasons Saturday when the Mavericks host the UTA Season Opener at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie.
The university women will run first at 8 a.m., followed by the university men approximately 20 minutes later. Both groups will run 5k races. High school boys and girls races will be contested following the college races. Admission to the UTA Season Opener/Gerald Richey High School Invitational is free.
"We are excited to host our meet," UTA coach John Sauerhage said. "It's always nice for our student-athletes to get the chance to compete in front of friends and family right here. It's early in the year, but we want to run well."
UTA has put together a strong field for the event. Men's and women's teams from Baylor, TCU and North Texas, as well as the SMU women's squad, will be competing in the Division I race.
The Maverick men are the favorite to win the Sun Belt Conference for the second straight year, while the women are picked second. Both had strong opening performances two weeks ago at the Bear Twilight Invitational.
"This is another opportunity to get tuned up for our major meets coming up," Sauerhage said. "Our upperclassmen want to see where they stand physically, while our younger runners want a chance to earn travel roster spots."
Lynn Creek Park at Joe Pool Lake is located at 5610 Lake Ridge Parkway in Grand Prairie. Results of the college and high school races can be found at run-far.com.
