NEW ORLEANS - After UT Arlington stole the headlines this week with wins over Ohio State and Memphis, sophomore Kevin Hervey was named the Sun Belt's Student-Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.
Hervey played a leading role in the two biggest regular-season wins in program history. The sophomore led the Mavericks in scoring in road wins over Ohio State (18 points) and Memphis (22 points) over a four-day span. Hervey grabbed seven rebounds against the Buckeyes and followed it with 11 against the Tigers for his first and the team's first double-double of the season.
He scored in double figures in all three games, averaging 16.7 points and 8.0 rebounds for the week. Hervey also averaged 2.3 assists and shot 82.4 percent (14-17) at the line.
The Little Rock Trojans also nabbed a marquee win of their own with a 49-43 triumph at San Diego State, the preseason favorites in the Mountain West Conference. The Trojans become just the 12th team and sixth non-Mountain West member to beat the Aztecs in Viejas Arena since 2005. With the win the Trojans are now 3-0 to start the season for the first time since the 2008-09 season and just the seventh time in its Division I era.
Several other Sun Belt Conference student-athletes had stand out performances last week.
UL Lafayette senior Shawn Long became the all-time leading rebounder in Ragin' Cajuns basketball history after pulling down a season-high 14 boards on Friday at SEC opponent Alabama. Long, who recorded his second double-double of the season and NCAA-leading 54th of his career, tipped in a Steven Wronkoski miss with 5:47 remaining to record his 1,065th career rebound and pass former Ragin' Cajuns standout Roy Ebron (1,064 from 1971-73) as the school's all-time leader. Arkansas State junior forward Anthony Livingston had double-doubles in each of A-State's games last week, posting 24 points and 10 rebounds in the narrow setback at Savannah State followed by 15 points and 14 rebounds in a 78-69 victory over Jackson State. Little Rock's Marcus Johnson Jr. averaged 18.0 points, 3.5 assists and 3.0 rebounds while shooting 66.7 percent from the floor, 70.0 percent from 3-point range and making all five of his free throws in Little Rock's wins over Centenary and San Diego State last week. He scored 30 points in just 22 minutes of work vs. Centenary on Nov. 18, shooting 11 of 13 from the floor and 7 of 8 from 3-point range and became one of just seven Little Rock student-athletes to score 30 or more in a game since 2001 and the first since Will Neighbour in Jan. 2014.
