HOUSTON, Texas - UT Arlington women's tennis had its weekend shortened at the Rice Invitational due to a rainout of play on Sunday.
Despite the unfriendly weather, the Mavericks return with positives from the tournament after going a combined 6-0 in the first round of singles matchups and 6-1 against Big 12 opponents overall. Angeles de los Rios had the best run after she reached the semi-finals of Flight 2.
"We got a lot of good matches under our belt and got to practice a lot of areas that we needed to," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "It was nice to see the girls taking advantage of the matches and implementing what we did in practice."
On the doubles side, Elizabeth Thoms and Astrid Gehre were able to bounce back from an opening-round loss. The pair would advance through Flight 1's consolation bracket into the finals before play was suspended.
Carla Cerdan Vives joined with Valeria Lopez to make a run through Flight 2 Doubles. The team won its opener 6-3 vs. a duo from Sun Belt rival Texas State before knocking off a threat from New Mexico State. Cerdan and Lopez would fall to a team from the tournament hosts in the semi-finals.
"It was good to see them get a couple of matches under their belt," Benitez said. "They are getting used to playing doubles together."
The Mavericks return to the court with their first tournament inside the Metroplex as the head to Dallas and the SMU Invitational beginning on Oct. 9.
