DALLAS, Texas - Junior Aaron Guanlao carded his second straight even par round to lead the UT Arlington men's golf team on the final day of competition at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate at Royal Oaks Country Club.
Guanlao, a Haslet native, turned in scores of 74-71-71 to finish the 2-day event at 3-over par 216 to finish in a tie for 26th place in the 72-golfer field. Sophomore Tanner Gore finished just two positions back in a tie for 28th place at 5-over par with scores of 73-72-72.
As a team, UTA finished in 10th place at 29-over par, 14 strokes ahead of 11th place SMU. Tournament host Baylor ran away with the team title by a convincing 32 strokes with a 31-under par 1034. Houston finished in runner-up position at 1-over par, while Michigan finished third and Kent State rounded out the top four.
"I thought we played a bit better today," said UTA head coach Stuart Deane. "From a scoring standpoint, we were a little better. The boys played looser than they did the first two rounds. We started out the tournament a little tight. The boys were trying just a little too hard. If you look at our scoring as a team, our average was a little better than our scoring average has been for the previous two tournaments. We took several positives out of this tournament."
Unlike most college tournaments that score the four low performances from each team's five-person lineup, the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate used the low five scores and allowed each team six golfers in its lineup.
The six-count-five format is a little different in that it places a premium on squad depth," said Deane. "Filling that position with a sixth golfer that counts is a challenge. I thought Nick Barney played fantastic in that role. All six guys contributed. Our top three didn't score as well as we would have liked, but this format allowed us to develop more depth."
Behind the team's top finishers in Guanlao and Gore, senior Zach Galliford rebounded from yesterday's tough outing to shoot an even par 71 to finish in a tie for 46th place at 7-over for the tournament.
Barney finished tied for 48th at 8-over, wile Josh Radcliff tied for 54th at 10-over 224 and Will Dennis made the most improvement over yesterday by finishing seven strokes better than his first round and finished 14-over par.
Following the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate, the Mavericks will play their final tournament of the fall season Oct. 30-Nov. 1 at the Duck Commander Intercollegiate at Mystic Creek Golf Club in El Dorado, Ark. The team will play six regular season tournaments during the spring, prior to the April 23-25 Sun Belt Championships in Miramar Beach, Fla.
