ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington men's tennis team carried its momentum through to a 5-2 victory over UMKC Saturday at the UTA Tennis Center.
The Mavericks stretched their win streak to six games and improved to 6-3 on the season. UTA has yet to lose a match in Arlington this season. UMKC evened its record to 3-3.
"We played really well in doubles, but we didn't start as intense as we needed to in singles," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "We had some soft first sets, but kudos to our first four players that were able to turn it around and get a win for us with easier second sets. Overall a pretty good day of tennis for us."
UTA grabbed the early doubles point with a 6-3 win from Daniel Armengol (5-0) and Jhonathan Gonzalez (3-6). Mario Muniesa (5-2) and Guanarteme Nuez (4-3) contributed with the 6-2 victory. Pablo Colvee (3-5) and Ion Efrim (1-4) came up short 5-3.
In singles play, Gonzalez battled through an aggressive first set to earn a 7-6, 5-0 win in the No. 1 position. Nuez came up victorious in his own fight to defeat his opponent 7-6, 6-1.
Muniesa and Armengol both picked up their fifth wins of the season with 7-6, 6-2 decisions. Colvee and Efrim fell in their matches.
Up next, the Mavericks take a three-match trip to Florida Feb. 19-21. UTA will face Florida Atlantic at 12 p.m. Friday and turn to Florida Gulf Coast Saturday at 11 a.m. The Mavs close out the tour at UCF at 10 a.m. Sunday.
