ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington improved its home winning streak to 14 matches by sweeping Mountain West foe Nevada, 4-0, on Saturday at the UTA Tennis Center.
The Mavericks, improving to 2-0 this season, won a heated contest after coming back to clinch the doubles point and then sweeping singles action.
"The match was a pretty physical one," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "We played really well in doubles. The girls played really well also in singles after getting the momentum in doubles and won a lot of the first sets and it carried on to a much nicer victory."
Trailing on all three courts during doubles action to get play underway, it was Agustina Serio and Luxizi Meng that helped turn momentum in favor of UTA. The pair overcame a deficit on Court 2 to earn a 6-4 win. Astrid Gehre and Jessica Birowski also earned a comeback in with the same score.
Singles play went closer to script for the Mavs as UTA won all three of its matches in two sets. Serio defeated Delaney Phanco 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 5 spot, while Jessica Birowski (6-1, 6-4) and Astrid Gehre (6-4, 6-1) also picked up wins.
Nevada fell to 1-5 with the loss. UTA returns to action on Feb. 19 against Missouri State to continue its four-game homestand. Admission is free for all UTA matches at the UTA Tennis Center. Follow @UTAMavsTennis on Twitter to keep up with all of the action.
