ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington senior Elizabeth Thoms was named the Sun Belt Conference Women's Student-Athlete of the Week in tennis, as announced by the league office on Wednesday.
"I'm very proud of Lizzy," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "She has stepped up as the great leader she is on and off the court."
The award is UTA's first of the season and Thoms' third of her career.
Thoms was perfect for the week in her two singles matches as the Mavericks went 2-0. Thoms defeated Missouri State's Ema Turudija 6-4, 6-1 to open the week before defeating Sam Houston State's Fabienne Gettwart 6-1, 6-3. Her lone doubles matchup was left unfinished due to the Mavs clinching an early win.
The West Sussex, England native is 3-0 in singles for the season to help lead the Mavericks in their perfect 4-0 start. UTA has won its last 16 matches at the UTA Tennis Center dating back to last season.
UTA is in action this weekend in Florida as it plays away from home for the first time. The Mavs take on UCF to begin the two-match trip on Saturday.
