ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington women's tennis team will test its talents in its first pair of road matches of the spring this weekend. The trip includes a matchup against No. 62 Florida International.
UTA (4-0) opens at UCF at 12 p.m. CT Saturday in Orlando. The Mavericks play their first nationally ranked opponent of the season at 12 p.m. CT Sunday.
Senior and team captain Elizabeth Thoms earned the team's first Sun Belt Student Athlete of the Week honor of the year behind two, two-set victories in the No. 1 position last weekend. The honor was the third of her career.
The Mavs took down Missouri State on Friday 6-1 and Sam Houston State 5-2 on Sunday at the UTA Tennis Center. The victories extended their home winning streak to 16 matches, a feat that fuels the team with confidence and momentum moving forward.
Thoms (3-0) is one of five undefeated Mavericks in singles play this season. Jessica Birowski and Agustina Serio each lead the team with four wins, while Angeles de los Rios and Astrid Gehre both stand at 2-0. UTA has yet to lose a doubles match.
UCF (3-3) dropped its first American Athletic match with just one singles win on Sunday. The Knights open a 14-match homestand Friday against Mercer before hosting UTA.
Florida International (5-1) has won four straight in route to a No. 62 ranking in the latest Oracle/ITA Division I Women's Collegiate Tennis Rankings. The nod marks the first for FIU since Feb. 12, 2012 as the Panthers are off to their best start since 2001.
Florida International is coming off a pair of road wins against Sun Belt member Georgia State last Friday and George Washington on Saturday. Florida International will face Eastern Michigan Friday while waiting for the Mavericks.
