ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington men's tennis team stretched its winning streak to four after sweeping Cameron and Seminole in a doubleheader Saturday.
The Mavericks improved to 4-3 on the season and remain undefeated at the UTA Tennis Center. UTA wasted no time in the cold weather this morning and defeated Cameron 4-0. The day became long for the Mavs in the afternoon matchup after nearly three hours of play turned into a 4-3 decision.
"We definitely played a physical match," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "Two matches in one day, that's what we wanted just to get used to the competition and build our endurance. It's unusual, so we wanted to challenge our guys."
The Mavericks hit the road for a rivalry match against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 3 p.m. on Monday. UTA hosts UMKC at the UTA Tennis Center on Saturday at 1 p.m.
"The guys are really excited about Corpus," Benitez said. "It's a big rivalry that we have with them. It's always been 4-3 the last three or four years, so we're looking forward to it. It's going to be a physical match. It's going to be hot and windy, so the guys need to be ready to spend a lot of time on the court."
UTA 4, Cameron 0
The Mavericks made quick work of Cameron on Saturday morning. UTA earned the doubles point with wins from Carlos Arbiza and Pablo Colvee (6-3), Daniel Armengol and Jhonathan Gonzalez (6-3), and Mario Muniesa and Guanarteme Nuez (6-4).
Gonzalez picked up a win in singles play 6-2, 6-0. Arbiza pulled out a 6-3, 6-1 victory and Nuez was successful in his two sets, 6-1, 6-3.
UTA 4, Seminole 3
UTA's second match lasted nearly three hours, but the Mavs pushed through with enough endurance to outlast a tough Seminole team.
The Mavericks grabbed the early doubles point that proved to be crucial after Seminole stole three of its singles matches. Armengol and Gonzales completed a 6-3 win and a 6-2 victory by Muniesa and Nuez sealed the point. Arbiza and Colvee's dual was suspended at 5-4.
Arbiza opened up singles play with a quick 6-1, 6-1 win. Armengol followed at 6-2, 6-3. Muniesa's match was one of the longest of the day, but the junior grinded out a 6-3, 6-2 win.
