ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington's Gerald Richey Invitational will officially serve as the season opener for the men's and women's 2016 cross country schedules released today. In all, the formidable slate includes four regular-season meets and three postseason races.
"This schedule will give our teams the opportunity to compete at the highest level while preparing us to compete for conference championships and NCAA berths as teams and individual qualifiers," UTA coach John Sauerhage said. "I've very excited about the upcoming season and look forward to our first practice in August."
The Gerald Richey Invitational hosted by UTA will be held Saturday, Sept. 10, at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie. The meet will feature both college and high school races beginning at 8 a.m.
Following its home meet, the Mavericks will travel to North Texas for the Ken Garland Invitational in Denton, Texas, on Sept. 17.
One of the highlights of the season will be a trip to the prestigious Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational two weeks later (Sept. 30). The men received an invitation to participate in the featured "Blue Division" race, while the women will participate in the "Gold Division."
In addition, the Mavericks will return to Alabama's Crimson Classic on Oct. 14. Another highly competitive field will take part in the race, which is the final regular-season tune-up for the Mavs.
The Sun Belt Conference Championship is set for Oct. 29 in Troy, Ala. The UTA men have won league titles in three of the past four years, while the women won the SBC crown in 2014 and placed third in 2015.
On Nov. 11, both UTA teams will make appearances at the NCAA South Central Regional in Fayetteville, Ark. The NCAA Championships, which will feature select teams and individuals based on performances at the NCAA regional meets, will be contested in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 19.
