GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - The UT Arlington men won the Gerald Richey Invitational In convincing fashion on Saturday morning, while the women took third at the Mavericks' home meet, which served as the season lid lifter for both teams.
The men claimed the top five places, led by Michael Guerrero, who crossed with a 3.2-mile clocking of 15:28.9. The 15 team points marked the second time in the past five years that the Mavericks posted a perfect score, matching the achievement at the UTA Season Opener in 2012.
Tyler Forde was the meet's runner up with a time of 15:37.4. Grayson Birka (15:40.2) came in third, just ahead teammates of Grant Copeland (15:42.2) and Christopher Myers (15:44.1).
On the women's side, Tori Shelton finished eighth to pace the Mavs with a time of 18:33.6. She was the sixth college runner to cross in a race that included several unattached runners.
The squad's second finisher was Macey Beazley, who placed 16th overall (19:14.8). The remainder of the point scorers for the Mavs included Chantal Van Der Westhuizen (30th, 10:50.9), Bailey Balmer (31st, 19:51.4) and Penny Taylor (34th, 19:58.2).
"It was a nice opener for us," UTA coach John Sauerhage said. "We have a lot of work to do, but we just have to focus on what we need to do to get better throughout the year. We are happy to get the season underway and are looking forward to the meat of our schedules."
It was a busy morning at Lynn Creek Park. Seven high school boys and girls races were contested following the college meet. In addition, the Mavericks kicked off the day by hosting the UT Arlington Blazing 5K fundraiser.
It was the fourth straight year that the race was held at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie. Results of all races are available at runfarusa.com.
