SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Craig Lautenslager placed 20th individually to highlight UT Arlington's trip to the prestigious Joe Piane Notre Dame Cross Country Invitational on Friday afternoon.
As a team, the Mavericks placed 21st out of 25 squads with a total of 567 points. It was the second time in school history that UTA earned a spot in the Blue Race, which annually boasts one of the nation's best fields. Twelve of the 25 teams were ranked among the nation's top 45.
Lautenslager completed the course with a 5-mile clocking of 24:07.7. The senior was .5 seconds behind the top Texas finisher and placed ahead of Texas A&M's best runner. Those schools are among the top three teams in the South Central Regional rankings.
Junior Michael Guerrero was the second Maverick across the finish line. He broke the 25-minute standard and placed 90th with a clocking of 24:50.5. UTA's other point scorers included Justin Domangue (161st, 25:37.4), Joel Duren (162nd, 25:38.1) and Tyler Forde (174th, 25:54.4).
"Craig ran really well, but this was a test for our men's team that shows we have a lot of work to do to accomplish our goals," UTA coach John Sauerhage said. "Justin, who is just a freshman and Joel, who is coming back from injury, had strong performances as well."
On the women's side, UTA totaled 572 points to grab 24th among the 28 squads contending in the Gold Race. Tori Shelton paced the squad for the third time in as many events, finishing 25th individually with a 5k time of 17:45.1.
Macey Beazley was the No. 2 runner for the Mavs, placing 119th in 18:48.5. Penny Taylor also came in under the 19-minute mark (18:53.0) to land in 128th. UTA's final point scorers were Taylor Repa (166th, 19:18.4) and Tamerah Gorham (169th, 19:21.3).
"Tori did a nice job again for us today," Sauerhage said. "Macey, Penny and Taylor also showed well. We just have to keep working. We are definitely improving as we go along."
The Mavericks will take next weekend off from competition prior to running in the Crimson Classic on Oct. 14. It will be the final regular-season meet of the season for UTA prior to the Sun Belt Conference Championships on Oct. 29.
