ARLINGTON, Texas -- A home run and three hits from senior slugger Colton Turner highlighted a 17-3 win for UTA in its annual Alumni Game, a nine-inning scrimmage against former UTA standouts, on a perfect Saturday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Turner's 3-for-6, four-run game helped the 2017 UTA baseball team to a 22-hit attack in the friendly contest. UTA also got three hits from Omar Salinas, Noah Vaughan and Josh Minjarez, with Salinas leading the way with four RBI. Junior third baseman RJ Williams had three RBI, with senior catcher Brady Cox and freshman shortstop Zac Cook each collecting multi-hit games. UTA also got hits from Quintin Rohrbaugh, Will Olson, Christian Hollie, Easton Johnson and Phillips Childs, with Aaron Funk scoring a pair of runs.
The alumni were led at the plate by two doubles from former catcher Greg McCall, who played 2016 in high class-A. Matt McLean, Derek Miller, Preston Beck, Ryan Walker, Peter Cuomo and TJ Hillman each had hits with Matt Otteman driving in a run.
Prior to the game, the UTA Alumni home run derby was won in a three-time swing-off with former All-America outfielder Michael Choice by Matt Otteman. Later in the evening on Saturday, the alumni will also gather at the Justin D. Wilson Hitting Facility for the annual First-Pitch Fundraiser.
The Mavs turned to senior righty Kadon Simmons to start the game. Simmons worked two innings, allowing four hits and two runs, striking out three. Junior southpaw Jakob Hernandez started the third inning, working two shutout innings, allowing a double and striking out three. Junior righty Trae Patterson started the fifth inning, Adam Meyer tossed a shutout inning in the sixth and Austin Gardner worked an inning for each team in the seventh. Matt Michalski tossed a shutout eighth and Dylan Schneider worked a perfect ninth inning.
The alumni started Robby Deevers on the mound, who worked the first inning, allowing a run on a hit and walk. Jacob Moreland took over in the second inning, working three innings. Lefty Chase Weaver started the fifth inning on the mound, tossing two innings, with 2017 UTA veterans Gardner and Ryan Buss each working an inning in relief for the alumni.
The alumni opened up the scoring in the top of the first, as McLean lined a single with two strikes down the leftfield line and Miller dropped a single into the gap in left-centerfield. After a strikeout, Beck laced an opposite-field double to score McLean.
The Mavs answered in the bottom of the first as Rohrbaugh drew a four-pitch, two-out walk and Cox tripled to deep centerfield, scoring Rohrbaugh from first base.
Alumni got back on top with a double to leadoff the inning with McCall. Former UTA shortstop Doug Durrwachter moved McCall over to third with a groundout and Otteman grounded out up the middle to score McCall's pinch runner, Peter Cuomo.
In the bottom of the second, UTA took the lead with four runs on four hits and an error. Hollie led off with a two-strike single to right-centerfield and Colton Turner replaced him with a fielder's choice. Minjarez then singled to the left side and Aaron Funk loaded the bases with a walk. Williams then forced in Turner with a fielder's choice and Salinas dropped a RBI single into right-centerfield to score Minjarez. Rohrbaugh drew a bases-loaded walk to follow and Brady Cox singled through the left side to score Funk.
Turner got the Mavs back on the board in the third, belting a solo homer over the left-field fence. Minjarez then singled to right-centerfield, scoring on a RBI single from Salinas.
In the top of the fifth inning, the alumni got on the board with a pair of one-out walks off Patterson. After a wild pitch, Matt Shortall scored McLean with a RBI groundout up the middle.
The Mavs added four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Turner led off the inning by reaching on an error and Minjarez singled. Funk followed with a walk to load the bases and after a harmless fly out to shallow centerfield, Salinas drive in a pair with a single down the leftfield line. Rohrbaugh then scored one with a single and Noah Vaughan scored Rorhbaugh with a double into the leftfield gap.
UTA added in the sixth inning, as Turner led off with a single and Cook doubled off the bench. Childs then ripped a pinch-hit single to left to score Turner. Williams followed with a two-RBI double down the line and Olson followed with a double to rightfield to score Williams.
In the seventh inning, while facing Gardner on the mound, UTA got a leadoff single from Vaughan and singles from Turner and Cook to load the bases. Childs then forced in Vaughan with a fielder's choice RBI.
The Mavs open their 2017 season on Feb. 17 vs. Southeast Missouri at 2:30 p.m. CT on the campus of Stephen F. Austin.
