ARLINGTON, Texas - UTA men's tennis remained perfect at the UTA Tennis Center by downing Incarnate Word 4-0 on Friday.
The Mavericks stretched their record to 3-1 this season as it remained unscathed on home court, taking all 15 points through their three homes matches. UTA picked up momentum with a hard-fought doubles point, taking No. 2 and No. 3 singles to claim the opener.
"I was really proud of how we came out and played well in doubles, they are a very good team in doubles and it was a big point," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "Once we got the doubles point we were able to battle through the wind in singles and claimed the match with good play across the board."
Daniel Armengol and Guanarteme Nuez got things started at No. 3 doubles with a 6-1 win. The point was clinched after Mario Muniesa and Marcos Sanz claimed the opening break and took No. 2 6-2.
While UTA struggled at the top of the lineup to put sets away, the bottom half proved too much for the Cardinals. Armengol was perfect with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4. Mauricio Del Rio inched UTA to within a point as he swept the second set of a 6-3, 6-0 victory.
Marcos Sanz, a newcomer to the UTA squad, picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win to clinch the match.
UTA returns to the court on Sunday when it hosts New Mexico State.
