ARLINGTON, Texas - The Mavericks were able to best the Aggies in a close battle on Sunday, 4-1, to remain perfect at the UTA Tennis Center.
UTA improved to 4-1 overall with its victory over New Mexico State (5-2). The Mavs claimed the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3, while No. 2 doubles was left tied at 6-6 as the match could've swung either way.
Getting the doubles point was big for us, we were able to pull out a couple of close matches," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "Once we got the momentum we were able to use it and play at a high energy in singles against a very good New Mexico State team. I am proud of the way we played and we will take the positives from this win going forward."
Singles proved equally as matched as the doubles point did with each match teetering either way. Guanarteme Nuez claimed his point as his opponent retired at No. 1 with Nuez up 4-1.
New Mexico State drew its first point at No. 6 singles with Marcos Sanz unable to string things together, falling 6-0, 6-2 to Enrique Asmar. The loss was Sanz' first in singles play this season. UTA didn't wait long to build the lead back to two points with Mauricio Del Rio taking his match 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5.
With UTA trailing in No. 2 and No. 4 in the second set, all eyes turned to Jhonathan Gonzalez after he took his first set and was neck and neck in the second. Gonzalez was able to get a break and won the finale 7-5 to claim the final point for UTA.
UTA continues its nine-match homestand when it hosts former Southland Conference rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a Texas Region matchup.
