ARLINGTON, Texas -- Kevin Hervey's double-double highlighted four players scoring in double figures, leading UTA men's basketball to a 76-61 win over Texas State, on Saturday night at College Park Center.
Hervey recorded his ninth double-double of the year and the 18th of his career in the win. It marked his third consecutive game with a double-double, finishing with 19 points and 10 rebounds, adding five assists and a steal. In two games vs. Texas State in 2016-17, Hervey has totaled 44 points.
UTA (17-6, 7-3 Sun Belt Conference) rebounded with the win over Texas State (13-9, 6-4 SBC) after the Bobcats posted an 81-73 win over the Mavericks on Jan. 7 in San Marcos, Texas, snapping UTA's 11-game winning streak.
KEY STRETCHES
First Half
UTA got the scoring started behind Drew Charles just a minute into the game, with the Mavs answering a three from Texas State with consecutive baskets from Jorge Bilbao. After the game was tied up at 8-8 with 16 minutes left in the half, UTA went on an 18-4 run over nearly five minutes of game action to take a 26-12 lead after a layup from Faith Pope.
The Bobcats began to fight back and held the Mavericks scoreless over a nearly three-minute stretch to cut into the UTA lead, 31-23, with just four minutes remaining. After a bucket at the rim from Bilbao, his sixth of the game, UTA took a 10-point lead into the under four-minute timeout. Erick Neal sank a three pointer with just over a minute remaining to give the Mavs a 39-28 lead, with the Bobcats cutting into the lead with a bucket for a 39-30 halftime lead.
Second Half
The Mavericks opened the second half on a 7-2 run to take a 46-32 lead after Hervey drained a three pointer - his second of the game. Texas State got on the board in the second half with a bucket at the rim and sank a three pointer to head to the under 16-minute media timeout in a 46-35 game.
A steal by Neal led to a bucket in transition from Kaelon Wilson, giving UTA a 48-35 lead with less than 15 minutes left in regulation. UTA's stifling defense took over out of the timeout, holding the Bobcats to four points over the next five minutes, stretching its lead to 54-39 on a putback from Pope with 10:30 left. UTA got three pointers from Charles and Jalen Jones, with Hervey and Neal adding buckets over the final 10 minutes.
KEY STATS
Hervey's outing highlighted the win for the Mavericks, who saw Bilbao, Charles and Neal score in double figures. Neal had 13 points, seven assists and three steals, with Charles adding 10 points and a rebound. Bilbao had 13 points, four rebounds and two steals.
Pope contributed six points in 10 minutes off the bench, with Jones adding five points and Wilson charting a four-point, three-rebound game.
