ARLINGTON, Texas - UTA swept its way through its home openers on Saturday, defeating Cameron 4-0 and Seminole 7-0 at the UTA Tennis Center.
The Mavericks 2-1 played perfect tennis in bouncing back from their season-opening defeat to Rice. The matches opened a nine-game homestand for UTA that runs through a match against SMU on Feb. 23.
"We played really well after being off for a long period and I was proud of how we started our home schedule," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "The guys did well in starting off by winning the doubles point and continued the momentum into the rest of the match."
Against Cameron, UTA found itself in a close battle for the doubles point. The Mavs were upset at the No.1 position and were tied in doubles after Guanarteme Nuez and Mauricio Del Rio took care of No. 3 at 6-2. Mario Muniesa joined with newcomer Marcos Sanz to avoid defeat in a tiebreak to claim the opener.
Singles proved to moved more smooth with all of UTA's three wins coming in straight sets. Jhonathan Gonzalez picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3, while Daniel Armengol and Mauricio Del Rio finished things off at No. 4 and 5 respectively.
UTA came out with energy in the second match of the day, defeating Seminole 7-0 in the day's finale. A pair of 6-0 wins in doubles got things rolling before the Mavericks closed out the six singles matches, all in straight sets.
Big winners on the day came from positions three through five as Gonzalez, Armengol and Del Rio were all perfect in their singles play.
UTA's schedule heats up on Friday when it welcomes Incarnate Word at 2 p.m.
