ARLINGTON, Texas - UTA's Sun Belt opener came down to the wire as senior Daniel Armengol lifted the Mavericks to a 4-3 win over Georgia Southern.

After taking the doubles point, it was a close battle with teams going all square at three points apiece. Armengol used his experience to power a three-set win and help UTA improved to 15-8 overall.

The guys played a very tough match in the morning," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "We played a very clean doubles and really showed a high level of tennis. We got an early lead and never looked back. Credit to Georgia Southern on starting really aggressive on us. They didn't hesitate to come back strong in singles. It was pretty even and we had our chances to put it away earlier, but Georgia Southern never gave up. I am very proud of our senior for clinching the match."

No. 52-ranked Mauricio Del Rio and Jhonathan Gonzalez helped get things started in doubles, taking a 6-2 decision at No. 1. Armengol joined with Guanarteme Nuez to also take a 6-2 win at No. 3.

Georgia Southern battled in singles play to take a pair of two-set wins to go up in the match before Gonzalez won 6-4, 6-4 at No.1, leaving three matches to go to three sets.

Nuez put the Mavs a point away with his 6-3 win in the third set at No. 3. However, the Eagles clawed right back with a tiebreak win at No. 2 in the third leaving it up to Armengol.

Armengol rallied from a tough loss in a tiebreak in the second set to power through the final games, taking a 6-2, 6-7, 6-1 match at No. 5.
