MT: Mavs claim road win over Shockers

March 25, 2017

Final Stats

WICHITA, Kan. - It came down to the final point, but UTA was able to slip by Wichita State in a 4-3 win at the Coleman Tennis Complex on Saturday.

The Mavericks (12-7) avenged a 4-0 loss to the Shockers in the first round of the Pacific Mountain Invitational on March 4 with an impressive team win, their first in a road matchup this season.

"I am proud of how we played and how we were able to defeat a tough opponent on the road on Saturday," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "We didn't play our best against them in the first matchup, but dug deep today. Getting the doubles point was huge for us, and we were able to win the singles points when we needed them most."

The margin for error was thin in doubles as UTA's No. 55-ranked doubles squad of Jhonathan Gonzalez and Mauricio Del Rio were unable to continue recent success, falling 6-2 at No. 2 doubles. Guanarteme Nuez and Daniel Armengol battled into the lead and kept it most of the way in a 6-3 win at No. 3. Eyes turned to No. 1 with Sansidh Kommaruju and Mario Muniesa battling with WSU's top team. The UTA tandem were down early, but rallied to claim a 7-5 victory and clinch the doubles point.

Wichita State quickly tied the match at No. 1 with a straight-set win. Nuez clinched UTA a second point as he won 7-5, 6-4 with all other matches going into a third set. The UTA lead went to 3-1 before the Shockers (9-8) started the comeback. WSU won two consecutive singles points, including No. 5 in which Wichita State won six consecutive sets.

The attention turned to the final match left in play with Armengol clinging to a lead at No. 4. The senior was able to hold steady and hold off a break attempt to win the match 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 and win the match.
